Things that need constant attention on a hot water system are leaking valves, elements, thermostats and most importantly the sacrificial anode which is always forgotten about, once it has degraded the minerals and chemicals in your water supply will then attack the tank it self.
If your existing storage electric mains pressure hot water system or gas mains pressure hot water system is at least four years or older, it would be wise to have this checked as this is the defence system of the tank preventing corrosion which will inevitably cause leaks.
How does it work?
Anodes are manufactured from a special grade of magnesium and they protect steel by a sacrificial electrochemical action. Magnesium is electro-negative relative to steel. When a magnesium rod is fitted to a steel tank filled with fresh water, a current will constantly flow through the water between the rod and any exposed steel area on the tank wall. The circuit is completed through the tank back to the magnesium rod. This protective current is produced by the magnesium releasing ions, and this results in corrosion in the anodic area. The magnesium (the anode) corrodes instead of the steel tank (the cathode). This principle of electrolytic corrosion control is called cathodic protection. Because cathodic surfaces cannot rust, the steel tank is protected.
Having this replaced can increase life to an existing tank by up to another 4-10 years depending on age and type of system.

How old is you system?
Most hot water heaters have a sticker, or label on the side detailing the heater’s size, model and serial numbers plus details relating to its operation. This sticker will show the date of manufacture of the heater and a close estimate of when it was installed will be two to four months after this date depending on the original installation date.
Continuous Flow Gas Hot Water Systems - Instantaneous
As much as we use them on a daily basis, hot water systems aren’t exactly a subject that comes up in regular conversation over dinner.
Realistically, as long as it works, most people are happy, with a second thought given to how it works or which brand is best for them.
As handy as they are, having to replace or find a new hot water system can be a real challenge, as companies offer a variety of different models to suit all types of households and locations, is it suitable for solar? Do we have gas in the street? Or will electric actually be cheaper?
While each model ensures you have hot running water, it’s always best to look into would be the best fit for your household, as the end result may help you save big on your future energy bills.
An instantaneous hot water system is usually a smaller, wall mounted unit that heats the water as you use it, rather than storing it like more traditional hot water systems will do.
As the name suggests, the unit provides continuous water flow until the shower or the tap being used is turned off. Continuous flow models also work with both gas and electrical systems, meaning that they will suit most households.
Most hot water system providers will have a gas constant flow hot water line, as demand for these smaller units has increased dramatically over recent years.
Some providers and brands label their continuous flow models as ‘instantaneous hot water systems’, so don’t be confused by the amount of options on the market.
They can either be Natural or LPG gas should natural gas not be available in your area.
